Audio performances have taken off over the last few years, and increasingly during the global pandemic.

This is a new page which will cover some key areas.

Immersing the Audience

Hardware – Single Audience Member

  • In-Ear Monitors can be used, which consist of high quality audio from a transmitter to a belt-worn receiver pack (containing batteries) into which the headphones are plugged via a mini-jack connector. The receiver often also has a volume control to enable the user to set their own volume.
  • Bluetooth can be risky as it can disconnect / be affected by external interference.
  • An MP3 player can be held by the audience member, potentially using their own headphones.
  • The audio file can be placed online and downloaded to the audience members’ own device, in advance, or on site (via QR codes providing the link).

Hardware – Group experiencing the same Audio

  • Silent Disco kits can be hired, with chunky headphones (which can more easily be cleaned between uses). They consist of a transmitter which usually requires mains power (although some can run off 12V from a heavy duty battery pack), and each of the headphones has the receiver built-in. Each headphone will have a battery pack which powers the receiver and headphone amplifier.

Safety

  • Noise Regulations in the UK (Musicians Union website)
  • Distraction from Environment – Ensure that the environment through which the audience is moving is safe from obstructions and hazards that require listening/hearing. Audience should not feel they need to cross roads with a full soundtrack playing in their ear – either use guides to help them across, or design routes so that the audience does not go near such hazards.
