The show closed between October 28 – 31st 1996 to allow significant changes to be incorporated and rehearsed, after brutal reviews. The revised version opened after a week of previews on November 11th 1996. The critics liked the changes, and the revised show went on to win the 1997 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical and Best Choreography. 
Further changes were made to the production in June 1997 (to coincide with a cast change)
