The Lighting
Department is headed by a Chief Electrician.
The size of the rest of the team depends on the size of
the venue.
-
Chief
Electrician
The head of the Electrics (LX) department is employed by the
theatre. He or she knows the electrical systems at the theatre
very well and may be responsible for the maintenance of those
systems. The Chief is also responsible for other staff who may
be employed full-time or may be brought in for each production
the theatre produces or may tour in with incoming shows.
-
Lighting
Designer
The LX Designer for a show may be employed by the theatre if
it regularly produces shows, or he/she may be on a freelance
contract for that show. A freelance designer is paid a flat
fee for the design.
-
Board
Operator
Member of show staff who, in communication with the Stage Manager,
operates the lighting control desk. If there are many moving
lights on a show, there may be a second Moving Light operator.
-
Followspot
Operator
Member
of show staff who is responsible for the operation of
a followspot. Shows requiring followspots tend to have
a minimum of two, with larger shows requiring six or
eight. The followspots are usually placed high in the
auditorium directly facing the stage. Some shows have
followspots providing side light and backlight as an
alternative.
