Obituary: The Stage, 25 November 1976
Frederick Bentham writes: “Stanley was a well-known figure in stage lighting, having joined Strand Electric in 1923. He had been a director since 1935, and joint managing director from 1945 until his retirement at the end of 1968. He was actively associated with the lighting of a number of productions and was for very many years to be seen seated in the stalls at rehearsals ready to whistle up help from the appropriate quarter. In spite of increasing lack of mobility through arthritis, he remained a familiar figure at first nights in the West End and at his desk in Covent Garden he was always at the ready – a friendly ombudsman – to sort out any problems.
There will be many who will miss this warm and unique personality of the theatre. Our sympathies to his wife Hilda.”
